Tarleton State opens indoor season, Angel Gomez breaks 5000m school record

PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Texans came out strong in the first meet of the season with multiple athletes moving into the top-10 in school history of their respective event.

The Purple and White competed Friday and Saturday in the Boo Rogers Multi Invitational and the Crimson and Gold Invitational. Both events were held at the Robert W. Plaster Center.

“We took a small group to Kansas to get a quality meet under our belt,” said head coach Clay Holland. “I was happy to see the progression we have made but we understand that we have a long road ahead of us to get to where we want to be.”

Boo Rogers Multi Invitational

The lone Texan to compete, Jordan Rae, earned a top-10 finish in the Women’s Indoor Pentathlon on Friday in Pittsburg, Kansas. She earned 3404 points across her five events. This performance earned Rae the No. 2 spot in school history for the Women’s Indoor Pentathlon.

Rae tied for third place in the high jump with 806 points, her best event of the weekend. She had top-15 finishes in her other four events on the weekend. In the 60m hurdles she earned 842 points with a time of 9.33. In the shotput, Rae threw a distance of 9.94m ( feet) earning her 526 points. The long jump earned her another 578 points in which she jumped 5.07m ( feet). In her final event, Rae earned 652 points with a time of 2:33.33 in the 800m race.

Crimson and Gold Invitational

Angel Gomez broke the school record for the men’s indoor 5000m race on Saturday for the Texans. Gomez ran a 14:48.49 setting the new mark to beat. The previous record of 15:09.63 was held by Peyton Heinig (2017).

Teammate Angel Contreras followed close behind Gomez in the men’s indoor 5000m race, locking up the No. 2 spot overall in school history. Contreras earned his place with a time of 14:56.09. Following close behind was Kellen Frickle who now sits fifth overall with a time of 15:10.21.

Moving to short distance, the Texans had three athletes etch their names into history. Taylor McFarland, Rese Schoonover and Caterrin Cox all moved up to the No. 2 overall spot in school history for their respective race.

McFarland claimed her first of two spots in the record books with an outstanding performance in the women’s indoor 400m race. She ran a 56.36 moving her to No. 2 overall in the 400m for Tarleton State.

Moving to hurdles, McFarland alongside teammate Schoonover share the No. 2 spot for the indoor women’s 60m hurdles. Both student athletes ran a 8.89 to set the new school record. Also moving into the top-10 is Mikayla Watson with a time of 9.22.

In the men’s hurdles, Cox earned the No. 2 spot in school history in the indoor men’s 60m hurdles. Cox ran a 7.96 etching his name in the Texan history books. The Purple and White had two other student-athletes move into the top-10 in Omar Mahmoud and Nathan Franco. Mahmoud ran an 8.20 earning him sixth place while Franco moved into ninth place with a time of 8.32.

The No. 2 spot in the Indoor Men’s High Jump now has a new owner. Davi Torres took control of second place in school history with a jump of 2.06m (6.76 feet).

The Texans will have a few weeks off for the holiday break before jumping back into action in January. The Purple and White will head west this time as they will travel to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to compete in the New Mexico Team Open Jan. 26-27.
