STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State Women’s Basketball swept the Western Athletic Conference awards this week after a commanding win on Saturday at McNeese.

The WAC announced on Monday that Texan guard Jakoriah Long was named both the WAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and the WAC Women’s Basketball Newcomer of the Week for games played Dec. 11-17.

The Texans played just one game in the week, but Long’s performance was dominant enough for her to catch the conference’s attention. Long tallied 34 points (11-13 FG, 3-4 3PT, 9-10 FT), three steals, two rebounds and two assists on Saturday in Tarleton’s 88-64 road win at McNeese.

Long had the most points in a game by a Texan in nearly 10 years. Her 34 points mark the most by a Texan in their NCAA Division I era, surpassing Teresa Da Silva’s 31 points scored last season. Long’s 34 points are the most by any Texan since Feb. 5, 2014, when Kiara Wright scored 35 at home vs. Midwestern State.

The Blinn College transfer is one of just five players in the country this year with 34-plus points on 80 percent shooting or better in a game. She scored 15 of her 34 points in the fourth quarter to seal Tarleton’s 24-point victory.

Long’s 34 points are the tied-most scored in a game by a WAC player this season (Abilene Christian’s Payton Hull). She also set a new career-high in steals (three) and tied her career-high in assists (two).

Long joins forward Andjela Bigovic of Texans to win a WAC weekly award this season. Bigovic was named the WAC WBB Newcomer of the Week after the first week of games on Nov. 13.

2023-24 Tarleton State WBB WAC weekly awards:

Week 1 (Nov. 6-12) – Andjela Bigovic, Newcomer of the Week

Week 6 (Dec. 11-17) – Jakoriah Long; Player of the Week, Newcomer of the Week
