Bennie was born October 5, 1934 in the Corinth Community here in Erath County to Robert Lee Cardwell and Mozell ‘Doc’ James Cardwell. She loved school, made excellent grades, and enjoyed playing basketball. She began her career as a secretary during her senior year of high school working part time at Tarleton. After graduation, she began working at Clay’s Building Materials where she met and married the love of her life, Doye ‘Buck’ Turley in 1957. They were married at Valley Grove Baptist Church where they remained long-time members. This union brought them two daughters-Karla and Kerry.

Bennie Worked full-time while also being an excellent wife, homemaker, and mom. She was a get-it-done kind of person, never a procrastinator. She kept a spotless house, chores always done, and was known for her fabulous cooking.

She could make the prettiest pecan pie and divinity candy but everything she made was picture perfect and delicious.

She worked as a secretary at Wolfe Nursery for several years then spent 30 years at the Department of Agriculture for the State of Texas.

Despite working outside the home, family was always Bennie’s top priority and her greatest love. Affectionately known as ‘Mammer’, she was a big part of the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She never missed a birthday, holiday, or any chance to visit and do for them.

Bennie was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Winnie Lee McNeill and Imogene McCoy. She lost a son-in-law, Jeff Burleson, in 1982. She was devastated by the loss of her beloved ‘Buck’ on August 3, 2022 after celebrating 65 years of marriage earlier that year in May.

She is survived by daughter Karla Burleson and husband Gerry Whittemore; daughter Kerry Shaw and husband Tony; grandchildren Eli Burleson and Rachel, Joshua Shaw, Jared Shaw and Maggie, and Hannah Shaw; 6 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild.

She will be missed and forever remain in our hearts.

The family would like to thank Stephenville Nursing and Rehab Facility and Solaris Hospice for the loving care Bennie received during the past year.

The Family requests donations be made to Valley Grove Baptist Church or to a charity of your choice.
