Services for Juanita F. “Sugar” Gillespie, 96, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, February 19, 2024, at Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Odessa. Arrangements are by Lacy Funeral Home.
Juanita was born on October 23, 1927, to parents Alvin and Mozelle Wood. She married James Marquois Gillespie on July 13, 1950, in Hobbs, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on September 4, 2008.
Originally from Trent, Texas, “Sugar” eventually moved to Odessa with her family. With her husband and children, life was spent moving numerous times around Texas, Utah, New Mexico, and Colorado. Her husbands work took the family through different states before heading overseas to work on offshore drilling platforms. She got to live and travel in Trinidad, West Indies, as well as England, and Holland. Touring France, Italy, Greece, etc. was very exciting for her and she loved talking about her travels.
Juanita was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, James Gillespie; her parents, Alvin and Mozelle Wood; brothers, Thomas Wood; and Fred Wood.
She leaves behind her children, Ronald Gillespie; Donna Gillespie; Wanda and Phile Lemons; Janice and Nick Plant; her grandchildren, Melinda; Steven; Neal; Noel; James; and Nicole; brothers, James and Mary; and Glen and Mary; sisters, Pauline; and Edwina; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Sugar will be missed by all of her family and friends that she met on her life’s journey.
