Tarleton State Baseball secures series victory over SFA on Friday afternoon

NACOGDOCHES- Texan Baseball tallied their fourth consecutive win and their second of the Easter weekend series against the Lumberjacks. 

Tarleton State (15-12, 5-6 WAC) took down Stephen F. Austin (3-25, 0-11 WAC) on Friday in Nacogdoches with a 13-3 final on the afternoon matchup. 

Matt Haley (W, 2-4) took the bump for the Texans, up one run on seven hits, one walk and a pair of strikeouts in 5.0 innings. 

Jack James (L, 0-3) got the start for the Lumberjacks giving up six runs on five hits, three walks and one strikeout in 1.1 innings.

Tarleton State had another great day at the plate with one home run from Tyson Drake for his third of the series, three doubles with help from Mason Hammonds (2) and Cris Enriquez (1). The visitors compiled 13 runs on 14 hits.

SFA put up three runs on 11 hits with a pair of doubles. 

Hammonds walked as the leadoff hitter to see one runner on for the Texans. Drake walked, putting Hammonds in position to score and Cole Miears singled on a bunt to load the bags with no outs recorded. A two RBI single from Enriquez brought Hammonds and Drake home to claim the first runs of the game. 

Tarleton State continued to pack on the pressure in the second inning with a big four-run inning. Ike Shirey was first on base after an error from the shortstop. Sergio Guerra singled down the left field line to put Shirey in scoring position. A sacrifice bunt from Hammonds advanced the pair to see a couple of Texans in scoring position. Drake walked to load the bases and a single from Miears sent Shirey across the plate. A two RBI double from Enriquez gave the visitors a five-run lead. Miears scored on a wild pitched to see the Texans up 6-0 in the top of the second.

In the bottom of the inning, a double got the Lumberjacks rolling with one out on the board. A single to third followed by a double saw SFA on the board with a solo run. The home team left a pair of runners stranded to close out the inning.

The top of the third began with a single from Kooper Shook and Shirey walked to put on a couple of Texans with no outs. A sacrifice bunt from Guerra advanced Shook and Shirey and a two RBI double put the visitors ahead 8-1. With Hammonds on second base, Drake ripped his third homer of the series over the right field wall, putting the home team down by nine runs. 

Trace Morrison walked to kick off the fourth inning. After a double play from SFA, Shirey kept the inning alive, reaching first on an error. Guerra joined Shirey with a walk to see another two Texans on and Hammonds cranked out a double to right center, bringing Shirey home. A wild pitch tallied the final run of the inning as Guerra crossed home for the 12th run for Tarleton State.

In the bottom of the sixth with one out recorded, a single followed by a walk and a groundout place two runners into scoring position for SFA. A wild pitch brought a run in to tally a 12-2 score. A walk and an error from the second baseman brought in an unearned run to bring the deficit to 11 and a pop up closed out the inning, leaving two runners on for the home team.

The top of the eighth welcome the final run of the game. Shook walked and Guerra advanced on a catcher’s interference. With two outs on the board, Drake singled to right field to bring Shook across the plate for a ten-run lead at 13-3. 

Tarleton State will be back in action Saturday at 12 p.m. as the Texans look for a clean sweep against the Lumberjacks.
