Arrest made in animal cruelty case

Sheriff Matt Coates with the Erath County Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying deputies from the ECSO were called to 518 County Road 712, which is the property of Cheryl Barker in Erath County in reference to an animal cruelty investigation.

An investigation has been ongoing and has resulted in warrants being issued.

As a result of the investigation two warrants were issued for the arrest of Cheryl Barker today. One warrant is for the charge of Cruelty to Livestock animals a Class A Misdemeanor. The other warrant is for the charge of Cruelty to non-livestock animals and is also a Class A Misdemeanor.

The Erath County Sheriff’s Office has been in constant communication with the Erath County Attorney’s Office which will be prosecuting these cases. The investigation will be reviewed by the County Attorney’s Office who will determine if any additional charges will be filed.

These warrants occurred because of the diligent work being conducted by deputies of the Erath County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with the Erath County Attorney’s Office. It is a violation of law to have animals and not properly care for them.
