Texans sit half-game back of WAC Tournament cutoff following doubleheader sweep at Seattle U

SEATTLE –  The dominance by Tarleton State (21-29, 7-14 WAC) over Seattle U (19-28, 11-11 WAC) on their home turf continued Friday night in the Pacific Northwest with the Texans picking up back-to-back 3-1 victories.

The Purple and White have now won four straight over the Red and Black at Logan Field in Seattle and take the all-time series lead 5-3. The Texans outscored the Redhawks 6-2 in the doubleheader action.

With the Friday night sweep, Tarleton State has put themselves in a prime position for postseason talk as they are just a half-game back from the eight-team WAC Tournament cutoff.

The Texans have now allowed just five runs over their last six games, five of those contests going to the win column for Tarleton State. The Purple and White have outscored their opponents 32-2 in those five victories.

Tarleton State 3 Seattle U 1

Alexa Rehmeier allowed just one run as she tossed her fifth complete game of the season. She is 4-1 across that stretch with the lone loss coming at the hand of then No. 1, current No. 2 Oklahoma. Rehmeier pitched to the tune of a 2.33 ERA across the 33 innings of work. In the loss to Oklahoma, she threw three scoreless innings over the Sooners.

The first three innings saw the two teams trade goose eggs before the Texans broke things open in the top of the fourth taking the 3-0 lead.

The scoring got started as Kalyn Hill singled to center field driving in Kayla Wallace making it 1-0 Texans. Wallace reached base on a 10-pitch walk.

Jordan Dickerson followed immediately behind swinging on the first pitch she saw blasting it to left field for a single and pushing across Katy Schaefer and Tristyn Trull giving the Texans the 3-0 advantage and all the offensive power they needed to secure the victory. Trull reached base safely thanks to an error by the second baseman followed by a single to the shortstop by Schaefer.

The Redhawks’ lone run came in the bottom of the sixth as Jasmine Wehn singled up the middle scoring Tai Wilson.

For the Texans, Rehmeier (W, 7-5) went the distance going 7.0 IP giving up just one run on five hits and striking out four.

For the Redhawks, Nicola Simpson (L, 4-8) also went wire-to-wire as she went 7.0 IP giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits, struck out a pair and walked a couple as well.

Tarleton State 3 Seattle U 1

The second game of the day saw the Texans once again take a 3-1 win, this time scoring in three different innings.

Hannah Blincoe threw her fifth complete game following Rehmeier’s fifth complete game in the first game of the three-game series. She is a perfect 5-0 when going the distance and has given up just seven runs across the 33.1 IP.

Schaefer got things going for the Texans in Game 2 as she blasted her 10th long ball of the season, 39th of her Texan career putting the visitors up 1-0. She is now just two away from tying second all-time for home runs in program history.

Seattle U tied things up 1-1 in the bottom of the third as Katie Walling scored on a throwing error by Hayden Fox.

The following half-inning the Texans took the lead back 2-1 as Dickerson hit a sac fly to center field allowing Hannah Reed to score from third. Reed came in to pinch run for Schaefer who reached base on a single to left field. Reed then moved to third as Hill hit a ground-rule double to left center.

In the top of the seventh, Tarleton State added an insurance run thanks to Ashlee LaRue who singled up the middle driving in Fox to make it 3-1 Texans.

Blincoe (W, 5-5) went the distance for the Purple and White going 7.0 IP giving up a lone run (unearned) on six hits and struck out a pair.

Avari Morris (L, 3-6) went the distance for the Red and Black going 7.0 IP giving up three runs on eight hits and struck out six.

The Texans will look to go for the sweep on Saturday afternoon and win five straight over the Redhawks. The final game of the series has been moved up one hour and will now get underway at 2 p.m. CT. The game will air live on ESPN+ as well as live stats will be available.
