Tarleton State downs Austin College in record-setting night

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State soccer remained undefeated and notched their first victory of the season against the Austin College Kangaroos at the Tarleton Soccer Complex on Thursday night, 8-0 in record-setting fashion.

With the win, the Texans (1-0-3) earn their first victory of the season. The Texans’ four games in the first week of competition leads the nation for the most games in the country.

In total, the Texans broke five single-game team records. Tarleton notched 46 shots, 23 shots on goal, 17 corner kicks, eight goals, and six assists. The Purple and White’s 46-shot effort is the second highest by a team in NCAA Division this season. The Texans 23 shots on goal tied for the third most in the country in 2024. Tarleton’s eight goals is top five in the nation in a game this season.

Lauren Grissom set the Tarleton single-game goal and points record, netted the first hat trick in program history scoring four consecutive goals in an 11-minute span. Grissom finished the night scoring four goals for eight total points. She is the second person in NCAA Division I this season to score four goals, joining Arizona’s Nicole Dallin (Aug.18 vs. Pacific). She is also the 13th NCAA Division I woman to net a hat trick this season.

Jenaya Brown became the second Texan in program to net a penalty kick. In the 65th minute, she found herself taking just the second penalty kick in Tarleton program history. She picked the right corner, finding nothing but the back of the net. Brown also tacked on an assist for her second career three-point game.

Jaycie Bass earned a pair of assists throughout the night. She increases her team-leading season total to three.

In total, the Texans broke five single-game team records. Tarleton notched 46 shots, 23 shots on goal, 17 corner kicks, eight goals, and six assists.

Kaitlyn Flanagan started the scoring finding the back of the net with 14 seconds remaining in the first half. Bass earned her first assist of the game sending in a corner that found the head of Flangan to give the Texans a 1-0 lead.

Tarleton broke out in the second half netting a program-high seven second half goals.

Una Hlynsdóttir knocked her first collegiate goal finding an open space in the 52nd minute. After back-to-back passes from Sammy Schulze and Kimberley Hjálmarsdottir.

In the 66th minute, after a Kangaroo yellow card, Brown found herself taking the second penalty kick in Tarleton history. She picked the left side finding empty space to give the Texans a 3-0 lead.

Adriana Alonso-Gomez netted the fourth goal just four minutes later. Alonso-Gomez earned her first goal of the season off the assist by Brown.

The final four goals came from the feet of Grissom. She scored her first goal in the 77th minute and netted her second of the night just 107 seconds later, both unassisted. But, she was not done yet. Grissom netted the first Texan hat trick just four minutes later off an assist by Nicole Fels. But again, the sophomore was still not done. With three minutes remaining, Grissom became the second player to knock in a fourth goal in a single game.

Austin College notched three shots and one shot on goal.

Mikayla Kendall and Riley Bloomfield combined for the second Texan shutout of the season.

The Texans started the night joined by a pair of Stephenville Soccer Association teams participating in pregame lineup introductions. After the game, the Purple and White signed autographs for all the waiting fans and excited future Texans.

For the first time in the regular season, the Texans will host a power four conference opponent with the Houston Cougars coming to Stephenville for a Sunday matinee contest at 1 p.m.
