(November 4, 1934 – September 10, 2024)

Joe Steele Gaines was born in Proctor, Texas on November 4, 1934. He moved to Stephenville around 1940 and lived there until marrying Martha Lee Neal in 1953. They were blessed with a son Joe Glenn Gaines in 1955.

Joe lived in Dallas, Texas and Garland, Texas, then proceeded to retire to the farm in Morgan Mill that they spent many weekends and vacations at after buying in the mid 1960’s. Joe started his work life out hoeing weeds in the family fields, digging ditches on a turkey and then moved inside to peddling clothing for JC Penny’s in Stephenville, Texas. After graduation and moving to the big city, he worked for Braniff Airlines and then to the Post Office where he finished out his work career before retiring in 1989. To make ends meet he tore down old buildings to sell the used lumber and then later in the 1960’s, had a moving company that kept him busy most nights and weekends for several years.

After retiring, he and Martha moved to Morgan Mill to settle down and went back to digging ditches for the house that he hoped to spend many years with Martha. He was heartbroken to lose the love of his life in 2001, but true to his form, persevered to Sept 10, 2024. He leaves a son, Joe Glenn, daughter in law, Sarah Kathryn and a grandson Christopher Glenn Gaines.

Donations in his honor may be made to Gideons International or Christian Veterinary Mission, Lynnwood, WA.
