STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State Football senior running back Kayvon Britten was named the Stats Perform FCS National Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
Britten, the United Athletic Conference Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, set the program’s single game rushing record with 273 rushing yards and four touchdowns to lift Tarleton State to a 28-14 at North Alabama on Saturday. His 273 rushing yards were the most by an FCS player in a single game in 2024. Britten’s four rushing touchdowns on Saturday are tied for the most in a single game in FCS this season.
The Cincinnati, Ohio, native broke a nearly 20-year-old record set by Derrick Ross on Sept. 10, 2005 against Western New Mexico. He was just four yards shy of his career-high set during his time at Arkansas Pine-Bluff on Oct. 16, 2022.
Averaging 13 yards per carry on Saturday, Britten came up with his third game this season with at least 155 rushing yards. Britten’s first touchdown at North Alabama was a 96-yard run, the longest running play by a Tarleton State player in the Division I Era.
Britten currently leads all FCS players in season rushing yards with 660 in 2024 and is top 10 in the country in several categories, including rushing yards per game (2nd – 165), all purpose yards (4th – 166.75) and rush yards per carry (7th – 7.76). He also leads the UAC in rushing yards per game.
The 2023 All-American was named to the Walter Payton Award Preseason Watch List and was tabbed as a Preseason All-American. Britten eclipsed the 3,000 career rushing yards mark and is one touchdown away from collecting his 40th career touchdown.
Britten completed 2023 as one of the best running backs in FCS. He led the UAC in rushing touchdowns (third in the FCS) and total touchdowns (tied-fifth in FCS). He was second in the conference in total rushing yards (ninth in FCS) along with rushing yards per game (tied-11th FCS) and yards per rush (21st in FCS).
Britten’s 1,150 rushing yards in 2023 were the sixth-most rushing yards in a single season in Texan Football history, averaging 6.3 yards per carry off 183 carries. His 16 rushing touchdowns last season were the third-most in a single season by a Tarleton State football player. In addition to averaging 104.6 rushing yards per contest, Britten came up with 106 receiving yards and a touchdown on 11 catches.
Scoring in 10 of Tarleton’s 11 games in 2023, Britten was also tabbed to the FCS Football Central All-American Third Team and the Phil Steele FCS All-American Fourth Team last season. Britten garnered 2024 Preseason First-Team All-Conference selection honors by the UAC in a unanimous decision.
Tarleton State returns to Memorial Stadium next week after being on the road for a month. The Texans will face Southeastern Louisiana in their final non-conference game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m. for Family Weekend.
