
STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton State Soccer notched its eighth shutout of the season with a 2-0 victory over Abilene Christian in the regular season finale on Saturday night at the Tarleton Soccer Complex on senior day.
The Texans (9-7-3, 3-4-0) secured their highest finish in the WAC with the victory over the Wildcats (2-7-8, 0-4-2). In a record-breaking regular season, Tarleton set new program records with nine total victories and three conference wins. Next week, the Texans will compete in its first WAC Tournament in its first three years of existence as a program.
Stevie Reynolds was the featured scorer for the Purple and White. Reynolds notched a pair of goals, her first multi-goal game as a Texan and the second of her collegiate career. Reynolds becomes the third Texan to notch a multi-goal effort joining teammate Lauren Grissom and Mila Bettinelli. She also becomes the fourth Texan to notch four of more points in a game and the second this season.
She notched her first goal of the match in the first four minutes, the earliest the Texans scored this season. Her second goal gave her team-leading fifth of the season. Reynolds also leads the team with 10 points after her four-point effort. With the pair of goals, she notched her 20th shot on goal of the season, tying Avery Harr’s single season program record of 20 set last season.
Keeper Mikayla Kendall notched her eighth total shutout and sixth solo shutout. She recorded one save, her 100th of the season.
Freshman Wyrzynski notched a team-best three shots and recorded an assist on the first Texan goal.
The Texans scored their first goal in the fastest time to begin the match this season. In the fourth minute, Reegan Wagg sent a pass to Wyrzynski in the front of the box. Wyrzysnki took aim to the right corner of the goal, where Reynolds redirected it into the back of the net for her first goal of the night.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Reynolds gave the Texans a two-goal lead. Reynolds gathered a pass from Jenaya Brown and flipped a bouncing ball over the top of the Wildcat keeper to notch her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
In the final 70 seconds of the first half, Victoria Cameron streaked past a pair of defenders for a one-on-one with the keeper. Her shot cleared the goalie but fell just to left of the post.
In the final seven minutes of the second half, Sam Liaty nearly gave the Texans a three-goal advantage. Her shot from the corner near the bench forced the Wildcat keeper to put her hands on it as it just was under the crossbar.
Tarleton out-shot the Wildcats, 12-6. Tarleton held the advantage, 5-1, in shots on goal.
The Texans will compete in its first ever WAC Tournament match next Sunday, Nov. 3. The Purple and White will take on California Baptist at 4 p.m. at the Elmer Gray Stadium.
