U.S. Veteran

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, Colonel Edward N. McKinney (USAF, Retired) passed away peacefully at the age of 72 in San Antonio, TX. Neal, as he was fondly known to friends and family, was a devoted family man, distinguished military officer, and accomplished professional. He leaves behind a legacy defined by service, honor, and unwavering dedication to his loved ones and country.

Colonel McKinney was born on April 14, 1952, in Dublin, TX, to the late L.N. “Bud” and Ella Marguerite (Houk) McKinney. He grew up in Dublin, where he graduated from Dublin High School in 1970. His love for learning and service led him to pursue higher education, earning a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Veterinary Medicine/Animal Science from Texas A&M University in 1974, followed by a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering from Texas A&M Commerce in 1983.

In July 1974, Neal began his distinguished career in the United States Air Force, where he served with honor and commitment for 26 years. During his military service, he graduated from numerous prestigious military schools, including Officer Training School, Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, and the Air War College. Neal was highly trained in a wide range of aeronautical and combat skills, earning two aeronautical ratings—pilot and navigator— where he specialized as an Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) and an accomplished B-52 Aircraft Commander. Throughout his career, he flew several aircraft, including the T-37, T-38, B-52D, B-52H, and C-12, and served in a variety of significant roles, including Military Attaché and Diplomatic Pilot in Morocco, Commander of the 17th Water Survival Training Squadron, and Director of Operational Readiness at 19th Air Force. His service earned him numerous honors, including the Legion of Merit, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal, among many others.

Following his retirement from the Air Force in December 2000, Colonel McKinney continued his professional journey, transitioning to civilian aviation as an MD-11 First Officer with World Airways, where he flew both cargo and passenger flights for the Department of Defense and commercial customers until 2005. He then worked as Managing Director for the Howland Group, Inc., focusing on DOD transportation policies and military equipment logistics. Neal later founded American Patriot Investments, Inc., where he directed investment strategies until his retirement in 2019.

Neal’s life was enriched by his passions for storytelling, hunting, cooking, and spending time with loved ones. His wit, humor, and infectious laughter made him the heart of any gathering. His legendary culinary creations—especially his brisket, turkey, and pulled pork—will remain treasured memories for his family and friends. As a man of faith and humility, Neal was deeply devoted to God and Scripture. He lived by steadfast values and was always ready to lend a helping hand or offer kind words. Whether mentoring colleagues, sharing laughs with friends over a cigar, or building cherished memories with his family, Neal’s presence was a gift to all who knew him.

Colonel McKinney is survived by his goddaughters and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, L.N.  “Bud” and Ella Marguerite McKinney.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Neal’s memory to Good Shepherd Rescue of Texas (https://www.goodshepherdrescuetexas.com/about-us), a cause that was close to his heart, especially after years of companionship with his loving dog, Indiana Rose (“Indy”). Neal’s deep affection for animals was evident in his bond with Indy, and supporting this organization is a fitting tribute to his compassion and care for animals.

A celebration of Neal’s life will be held on January 4th at Lucky Vines Vineyard and Winery (675 Co Rd 497, Dublin, TX  76446) following a military burial service at Live Oak Cemetery (1415 W State Hwy 6 Dublin, TX 76446) at 1:00 p.m.

Colonel Edward “Neal” McKinney will forever be remembered as a patriot, mentor, and friend. His unwavering dedication to his country and his boundless love for his family and friends leave an enduring legacy in the hearts of all who have had the privilege of knowing him.
