STEPHENVILLE – Another spectacular game marked another huge milestone for head coach Mark Cumpian as he won his 250th career game as head coach 10-2 (5) over Houston Christian Friday.

On Feb. 19, 2023, then senior, Grace Garcia tossed just the second perfect game in program history as the Texans defeated Texas A&M Commerce 8-0 (6) as Cumpian won his 200th career game as the head man.

Fast forward just less than 24 months later, the skipper for the Purple and White notches win 250 as the Texans earn their first run-rule walk-off win as Tarleton State puts up a nine-spot in the fifth to secure yet another milestone for the historic career of Cumpain.

Tarleton State 10 Houston Christian 2 (6)

Just eight days after making her collegiate debut on the first home season opener in the Cumpian era and earning the win, Shelby Schultz once again returned to the circle and gave the crowd something to be excited for.

The true freshman once again put on a strikeout clinic as she has struck out seven in every outing in her young collegiate career.

The first two innings went quietly for both sides as Shelby Schultz struck out five batters in the first two innings before the Huskies would make their first strike of the game in the top of the third.

In the top of the third inning Hanna York flew out to right field as she drove in AB Garcia to put the road team up 1-0 early on.

In the bottom half of the inning, the home team responded with a run of their own to tie things up 1-1. With Austin Germain on, Tristyn Trull doubled through the right-side driving in the Texans first of many runs on the day.

The next half inning saw the Huskies immediately respond as they took the lead back 2-1, their final lead of the game. Madison Dominguez reached base due to an error on Germain allowing Keely Castillo to score.

The bottom of the fourth was quiet for Tarleton State before the Purple and White blew the doors off as they exploded for a nine-spot fifth.

With Hayden Fox on, Braylin Pannill singled through the left side equaling things out 2-2. Then with bases load with Alyssa Budisalovich, Germain and Trull, freshman twin Casey Schultz hit a bases clearing double to center field to make it 5-2 home team.

With Casey Schultz on, Jaelynn Duke singled to shortstop driving in Casey to extend the lead to 6-2. After entering to pinch run for Kalyn Hill, Riley McDaniel made her way to third base before Kiana Gibson singled to center field scoring McDaniel to make it 7-2.

The next two runs came courtesy of Fox who doubled to center field driving in Gibson and Duke to push it to 9-2, just a run short of ending it all.

After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Fox scored the walk-off win as Germain hit a sac fly to center field as the Texans won 10-2 in five innings.

The Texans used just two arms in the afternoon affair as Shelby Schultz went 4.0 IP. She allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits as she struck out seven and walked not a single one. Senior Alexa Rehmeier (W, 1-0) tossed the final inning as she gave up two hits while striking out a pair as well.

The Huskies used a trio of arms as Kynleigh Evans (L, 0-2) got the start in the circle. She went four innings as she gave up four runs (all earned) on six hits and struck out just one. Cara Pitman then went just 0.1 IP as she gave up six runs (all earned) on six hits. Zaria Turner then tossed the final 0.1 IP as she walked one and threw a wild pitch.

Tarleton State 4 Austin Peay 6

The nightcap saw both teams score early before the Governor’s went up once again and never looked back as the Texans rally in the sixth fell short as the Purple and White dropped their second game of their young season.

Austin Peay got the scoring started early as Kylie Campbell tripled to right center scoring Raylon Roach to make it 1-0 visitors. Sammie Shelander then doubled down the right field line scoring Campbell to push it to 2-0.

In the bottom of the first, the Texans responded with their own early fire power as Hill doubled to right field scoring Casey Schultz to make it 2-1. With bases loaded, Bella Hernandez walked as Hill came in to make it 2-2. With bases still loaded, Fox took a hit by pitch to move it to a 3-2 Texans advantage.

The second and third went scoreless before the Governor’s put up back-to-back two-spot innings. Katie Raper doubled to left center tying the game 3-3 as Kam Moore scored. Kayleigh Roper then sinlged up the middle scoring Raper to make it 4-3 road team. In the fifth, Sam Leski doubled to center field scoring Shelander and Macee Roberts to make it 6-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Hill launched her second long ball of the season as she made it 6-4, the eventual final score. The Texans had two on with two outs in the sixth before Trull popped up to second base ending Tarleton State’s biggest threat late in the game.

For Tarleton State, a trio of arms was used this go-around. Hannah Blincoe (L, 1-1) earned the start as she went 4.0 IP giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out four. Gracie Riney then tossed the next inning as she gave up two runs (both earned) on two hits and struck out one. Kynlee Marquez then threw the final two innings in relief as she gave up just two hits, struck out two and walked a pair as well.

For Austin Peay, they also used three different arms in the Friday night matchup. Emberly Nichols got the start in the circle and went just 0.2 IP as she gave up three runs (all earned) on one hit and walked four. Samantha Miener (W, 2-1) then pitched the meat of the game going 5.0 IP giving up one run (earned) on three hits while striking out five and walking just one. Ashley Martin (S, 1) came out of the bullpen for the final 1.1 innings as she gave up just a lone hit while striking out one as well.

The Texans will return to action sooner than originally scheduled as all games on Day 2 of the Whataburger Invitational have been moved up 30 minuets. The Purple and White will now face South Dakota State at 1:30 p.m. and then face Akron for the first of two times this weekend with the first of two scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday.
