Tarleton State’s Adelaide Wyrzynski set to play for Philippines at the 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship in Vietnam

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State Adelaide Wyrzynski will compete for the Philippines at the 2025 ASEAN Women’s Championship (Serenity Cup) in Vietnam.

The 2025 ASEAN (Asian Football Federation) Women’s Championship is comprised of eight teams separated into two groups of four. Each group will play round-robin pool play with the top two teams earning a spot in the knockout stage. In the knockout stage, the four remaining teams will compete in the semifinals and the winners will meet in the title game. The group stages will be played in Haiphong and Phú Thọ, Vietnam. The knockout stage will take place in Lach Tray Stadium in Haiphong.

The Philippines first match will be on Thursday against Timor Leste. The squad will then play against Australia U23 on Sunday and Myanmar on Wednesday, Aug. 13. The first two contests will be played in Việt Trì Stadium in Phú Thọ and the final contest of the group stage will be held in Lach Tray Stadium in Haiphong.

Wyrzynski is one of seven players that will be moving up from playing for a Philippines youth national team and now on the senior league squad. She came to the United States last year for her freshman campaign with the Texans. The freshman scored two goals and tied for the team-lead with four assists. She was tied for second on the team with eight points and tied for the most among freshmen. For her outstanding efforts, she was one of the first two Texans named to the Freshman All-WAC Team at the conclusion of the season. She also exceled in the classroom during her first season earning Academic All-WAC honors as well.

The Philippines had not reached the knockout stage of the until 2019. The fourth-place finish for the Philippines was the beginning of their rise. After the ASEAN Championships being canceled for two years due to CoVid-19, the 2022 championships were held in the Philippines. After finishing second in their group, the squad knocked off Vietnam and Thailand with a pair of shutouts to claim their first title. Also in 2022, the Philippines reached the semifinals of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time ever. The following year in 2023, the Philippines earned their first bid to the FIFA World Cup.

Entering the tournament, the Philippines are ranked 41st in the FIFA World rankings. The team is the seventh highest ranked Asian nation and the second highest at the ASEAN Women’s Championship. Only Vietnam is ranked higher, tabbed the 37th best team in the FIFA rankings.
