NORMAN, Okla. — Tarleton State Track and Field had four place within the top three and saw one school record fall in their first meet of the season on Friday evening at the OU Winter Field Fest Invitational at the Mosier Indoor Facility.
In a meet where the Texans sent six athletes, four cracked the top three. Davi Torres broke the school record in the high jump. Lokesh Sathyanthan had the highest Texan finish earning second place in the men’s long jump. Sir Jonathan Sims, Sofia DeGroot and Torres each also posted third-place performances.
“What a great first meet for our Texan jumpers,” said head coach Bobby Carter. “I am very proud of each and every one of them. “We had a school record and personal bests. This is a good sign that we are doing what we are supposed to do early on. Now it’s time to get back to work and continue this momentum.”
The Texans earned a pair of top three finishes in their first event of the day, the men’s long jump. Sathyanathan leapt 7.75 meters on his second attempt, that turned into a second-place finish. The senior was just 0.02 meters behind Oklahoma’s Kennedy Stringfellow who captured the individual title. Sir Jonathan Sims was just 0.02 meters behind Sathyanathan with a best jump of 7.73 meters. Sims notched a pair of jumps over 7.50 meters, with Sathyanathan tallying three of at least 7.50 meters.
The Texans also had a pair of men compete in the men’s high jump. Davi Torres set a new school record by 0.01 meters clearing 2.13 meters and earned third place overall. He surpassed Joren McKeever’s previous school record of 2.12 meters set last season. Torres was perfect on his first two attempts, entering the competition at 1.98 meters. He cleared 2.08 meters on his second attempt as well as 2.13 meters. He was unable to clear the next bar of 2.18 meters. In his collegiate debut, Colton Andress cleared four bars to finish in fourth place. He had a best height of 2.08 meters, which he cleared on his first attempt. He had three attempts at tying Torres’ new school record marks but just missed.
Sofia DeGroot led the Texan women with a third-place finish in the long jump. Her best leap of 6.04 meters came on her second jump. DeGroot now ranks third in indoor program history and is one of four Texans to have an indoor personal best of at least 6.00 meters. She improved her personal best by over a tenth of a meter. It was her only leap of at least six meters and one of five in the entire competition. MacKenzie Hill place eighth overall with a best jump of 5.86 meters. She now ranks fifth in program history with her new personal best. Four of her six jumps were all above 5.70 meters.
