Tarleton State Track and Field sweeps WAC Weekly Awards

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State Track and Field swept the WAC Weekly Awards after a dominant weekend at the Michael Johnson Invitational.

JayBrion Jones and Sir Jonathan Sims swept the awards on the men’s side. It marks the first time this outdoor season for either duo and Sims’ second in his overall career winning an indoor honor last season. The Texan men have now had seven different student-athletes earn a weekly honor this outdoor season. Lauren Roy and Prestina Ochonogor swept the awards on the women’s side as well. Roy earns her second in her outdoor career for the Texans and Ochonogor earns her first as a Texan.

Jones was tabbed the WAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week. The freshman broke the wind-legal school record and won the Michael Johnson Invitational 100 meters clocking in at 10.10 seconds. Jones ran a season-best time that now ranks him 14th in the NCAA and fifth in the NCAA West.

Sims was selected as the WAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. He competed on both Friday and Saturday and finished in the top two in his event on each day. On Saturday, he won the triple jump with a best leap of 15.92 meters. Sims posted the 21st best mark in the NCAA this season and is ranked 13th in the NCAA West. On Friday, he placed second in the long jump to the second-best outdoor jump in the world this season by Lokesh Sathyanathan. Sims posted a best leap of 7.73 meters to finish second at the Michael Johnson Invitational. With his new season best, he ranks 31st in the NCAA and 16th in the west region.

Roy opened her season in the 100 meters placing second at the Michael Johnson Invitational. Roy set a new personal best clocking in at 11.08 seconds and was the fastest collegian in the field. With her new mark, Roy ranks 14th in the NCAA and eighth in the NCAA West. Roy also ran as part of the 4×100 meter relay. She ran the second leg for her squad that set the new school record clocking in at 43.33 seconds. Roy and her relay rank 14th in the NCAA and eighth in the west region.

Ochonogor fully opened up her outdoor season in the long jump at the Michael Johnson Invitational. Ochonogor placed second with a best leap of 6.50 meters. With that mark, she set her new season best and currently ranks 10th in the NCAA and sixth in the region.

Tarleton State Track and Field will head to the SMU Invitational for their regular season finale this weekend, May 1-2.
