Sharon Moves Into Saddle Bronc Lead With 84-point Ride

STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University saddle bronc rider Waitley Sharon posted an 84-point ride in Thursday action at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. to earn the top spot in the third go-round. 

Sharon, who won the regular season event crown in the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Lone Star Region, carries a three-head total of 248.5, topping the 80-point mark on all three rides and assuring him of a spot in Saturday’s championship finals.

He fought off his younger brother, University of Wyoming cowboy Traven Thursday for the third-round lead. Traven, who qualified for the CNFR by winning the Central Rocky Mountain Region, was 81.50 on his saddle bronc Thursday finishing the night in second place.

Also claiming a spot in the finals was Tarleton State goat tyer Faith Lundberg. Her 6.8-second time pushed her into second in the third-round standings. Her three-head total is 19 seconds.

In other Thursday competition featuring Tarleton State rodeo team members, Clay Greenslade turned in a 70.65 on his third bareback ride.

Friday’s final third go-round performance will feature five Tarleton State athletes including bareback rider Daxtyn Feild, bull rider Brenson Bartlett, breakaway roper Jenna Fulton and goat tyers Rylee Abel and Kaylie Garza.

The top 12 qualifiers in each CNFR event will advance to Saturday’s championship round.
