Tarleton State Men’s Basketball Ocypher Owens signs first pro contract in Chile

STEPHENVILLE —Tarleton State Men’s Basketball standout Ocypher Owens signed his first professional contract with Puente Alto of the in Santiago, Chile.

Owens spent the 2025-26 season, his fifth and final collegiate season in Stephenville last year. The Orlando, Fla., native, spent his first two season at Indian River State College before heading to Division I Le Moyne college for his next two seasons. Owens was a part of the Texans last year that earned a top five seed in the WAC Tournament.

“Congratulations to Ocypher Owens on signing professionally overseas,” said first year head coach Eric Haut.  “In my interactions with Ocypher, he is a great young man and a very talented basketball player. Texan Nation, please join me in congratulating Ocypher during the start of his professional basketball career!”

The forward became an integral part of the Texan squad at the end of last season starting 11 of the team’s final 12 games. His breakout game came on the road where he scored a season-high 16 point’s against the Big 12’s Cincinnati Bearcats. He scored in double-digits on five occasions including a 10-point effort in the WAC Tournament against ACU. He notched his first double-double as a Texan with 13 rebounds and 10 points on the road at Utah Valley.

Prior to Stephenville, Owens busted into the D1 ranks with a pair of seasons at Le Moyne. While with the Dolphins he averaged almost nine points per game in 44 contests across two seasons.  In his final year with Le Moyne, he strung together seven consecutive games of double-figure scoring totals. His D1 career high came in his first year with the Dolphins where he scored 26 points on 10-for-15 shooting from the field with five rebounds and three assists against Houghton.

Owens started his career with two seasons at Indian River. In his second collegiate season he averaged 11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 0.9 steals and 0.8 blocks in 20.2 minutes per game while shooting 56.2% from the field and 41.3% from beyond the three-point line. In his first year of junior college, he helped the Pioneers capture the FCSAA Southern Conference Regular Season Championship. They also earned a spot in the FCSAA DI State Championship Game, as well as the NJCAA Division I Sweet 16.

Puente Alto has made the league quarterfinals in each of its past four seasons competing in the Chilean LNB League. Last year, the team was the regular season runners-up. In 2024, the squad reached the Chilean Cup semifinals. The squad started its 2026 regular season on July 11th and will play its next contest on July 16th.
