STEPHENVILLE — Tarleton State University has signed on with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to offer its student veterans yet another valuable resource to help pay for their college education.
The Yellow Ribbon Program helps cover tuition and fees beyond Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits at private, out-of-state, foreign and graduate schools. The university joined the program in the spring and it became active this fall.
“Our veterans have invested in our country, and Tarleton State is committed to investing in their success,” said Dr. Sherri Benn, Vice President for Global, Community and First-gen Initiatives. “The Yellow Ribbon Program is another way we can remove barriers and expand opportunity for those who have served.”
Tarleton State Director of Veteran Services Stephanie Kittelson said the program benefits the university’s Post-9/11 GI Bill students who live out of state by allowing the university and the VA to share the cost of nonresident tuition that the Post-9/11 GI Bill does not cover. The university provides a scholarship to pay half of a qualifying student’s tuition and fees, and the VA pays the other half.
“Becoming a Yellow Ribbon school strengthens our commitment to those who have served by helping make education more affordable,” said Kittelson. “We’re proud to provide another meaningful way to support our veterans.”
Funds cannot be applied to room and board, housing or parking fines. Student veterans are eligible for Yellow Ribbon Program assistance if they meet the following requirements:
– Meet the 100% benefit tier of the Post-9/11 GI Bill
– Served at least 36 months on active duty and received an honorable discharge
– Were honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability after serving 30 continuous days
– Are a qualified dependent using transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill entitlement
– Are using the Marine Gunnery Sergeant John David Fry Scholarship
