Ruby Harrison was born on May 24, 1943, in Stephenville, Texas, to Jodie Luke and “Judy” Sechrist. She grew up on a farm with her brothers and sisters and graduated from Stephenville High School in 1961. She later moved to Fort Worth with her sister and brother-in-law, Euvonne and Bob Honeycutt. When they moved away, Ruby remained in Fort Worth and shared an apartment with roommates.
Ruby married Sam Harrison on June 3, 1966. She managed an insurance office until the birth of her first son, Todd, in 1970. She was a stay-at-home mother until Todd entered first grade, when she returned to school to study nursing. While attending Tarrant County Junior College, now Tarrant County College, Ruby began working as a nurse in training at Arlington Memorial Hospital in 1977 and worked her way up to become a registered nurse. Her second son, David, was born in 1979 while she was in school. Ruby graduated from nursing school at Tarrant County Junior College in 1981. She later earned her bachelor’s degree from TCU in 1986, completing prerequisite courses by examination and graduating in record time. She eventually became the charge RN of the medical-surgical department at Arlington Memorial Hospital. She also faithfully attended Parkview Baptist Church for nearly 50 years and served on its board.
After being divorced for several years, Ruby met Wade Owen in 1990. They married on February 16, 2002. Ruby welcomed her first grandchild, Alyssa, on March 3, 2000. Alyssa gave her the name “Gigi,” which all of her grandchildren would come to know and cherish. Spending time with her grandchildren was one of Ruby’s greatest joys. She loved traveling with them and often welcomed them for overnight visits. After retiring from nursing in 2012, Ruby spent the next several years traveling across the country with Wade. She fulfilled her goal of visiting all 50 states and also traveled to Canada, Mexico, and Europe.
Ruby also took great joy in the annual Sechrist family reunion. She attended faithfully from the age of seven, missing only a handful of reunions over the years. During the 1980s and 1990s, before the days of the internet, she served as president of the group that organized the reunion, faithfully sending letters and calling family members. She had planned to attend this year’s reunion but was unable to because of health issues.
Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Jodie Luke Sechrist and Elva Edith “Judy” Adcock Sechrist; her former husband, Samuel Glynn Harrison; her brothers, Olen Buster Sechrist, John Albert Sechrist, Carl Wilson “George” Sechrist, Raymond Dwain Sechrist, and Bobby Neil Sechrist; and her sisters, Alma Jean Denio, Juanita Dale Butler, Catherine Josephine Sechrist, and Billie Sue Sechrist.
Ruby is survived by her husband, Wade Lee Owen of Fort Worth, Texas; her sister, Ellen Euvonne “Von” Honeycutt of Cedar Park, Texas; her brother, Jerry Lynn Sechrist of Granbury, Texas; her sons, Todd Christopher Harrison and his wife, Claudia, of McKinney, Texas, and David Mark Harrison and his wife, Alexis, of Fort Worth, Texas; her granddaughters, Alyssa Harrison and Adriana Harrison, both of McKinney, Texas; and her grandsons, Andrew Harrison of McKinney, Texas, and Daniel “Danny” Harrison of Fort Worth, Texas.
