CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. — Tarleton State’s Avery Mendez was involved in all three of the Texans’ goals on Thursday night in Clarksville, Tennessee, helping the Purple and White win on the road at Austin Peay.
The Texans (4-3-6, 2-1-1 UAC) won 3-1 at the Governors (2-10-1, 1-3-0 UAC) at Morgan Bros. Field, Tarleton State’s fourth win in its past six matches.
Tarleton State kept its hot scoring streak, posting its fourth three-goal match over the past six, now with 20 goals in that span (3.3 per). The Texans improved to 3-1-4 on the road, with their lone road loss at Big 12’s Houston.
Mendez, a freshman, scored the match’s opening goal in the 12th minute, then assisted on Tarleton State’s next two goals, tying her career-high in points at four. Zahra Friess earned her team-leading sixth goal of the year in the 29th minute to make it 2-0 Texans, and Grace Berry scored her third goal of the season in the 79th minute to give Tarleton State a 3-1 advantage, which ended as the final.
Austin Peay’s Lindsey Arnold scored the Governors’ lone goal in the 60th minute to cut their deficit in half, but they never got any closer.
Each team had 17 shots in the match, with nine on goal for Austin Peay and eight on goal for Tarleton State. The Texans had a 5-4 corner kick advantage and had nine fouls to Austin Peay’s three.
Tarleton State goalkeeper Rylie Bloomfield logged eight saves with one goal allowed in 90 minutes. The Governors split time in front of the net, with Megan Waskiewicz allowing three goals with four saves in 78 minutes, then Mason Riley allowing no goals with one save in 12 minutes.
Bloomfield, Zoe Daly, Zoe Ballard, Peyton Bryant and Berry each played the entire match for Tarleton State. Adelaide Wyrzynski led the team with five shots, two on goal. Friess and Berry also each had two shots on goal.
Tarleton State will wrap up its three-match road trip on Sunday at 1 p.m. at North Alabama in Florence, Alabama.
