(February 25, 2015) — It was never close. It was never supposed to be.
No. 7 Tarleton State (25-2) rode the balanced scoring of four players with at least 14 points to a 88-58 drubbing of McMurry at Kimbrell Arena in Abilene Wednesday night.
The break from Lone Star Conference play meant an easy win for the Texans, still the top team in the South Central Region after the second regional rankings were released earlier Wednesday by the NCAA.
But the test gets tougher at home on Saturday. So, by the way, does the reward.
Tarleton hosts Texas A&M-Commerce at 7 p.m. Saturday following a 5 p.m. women’s contest. The Texans will be playing for at least a share of the LSC championship (Check back here later, as Angelo State entered Wednesday play tied alongside Tarleton at the top of the league standings and was visiting A&M-Commerce).
EJ Reed scored 19 points, just one short of his season high, to lead the balanced effort Wednesday. He was a perfect 7-7 from the field and went 4-5 from the foul stripe. Deshawn Riddick hit his first five 3-point attempts before finishing 5-6 from the arc with 15 points, a career high for the true freshman. Mo Lee also scored 15 and Malcolm Hamilton added 14.
Tarleton shot 49.3 percent from the floor and dominated the backboards, out-rebounding McMurry 41-22. Leading McMurry was Connor Robinson with 22 points and Hondo Webb with 11.
The Texans were without TaShawn Mabry Wednesday night. When asked about Mabry’s absence, Tarleton director of athletic communications Nathan Bural said Mabry has been “dismissed for violating the student-athlete code of conduct.”
Mabry was averaging 12.6 points per game.
