SAN ANTONIO (May 16, 2015) — Tarleton State loaded the bases twice, but was unable to capitalize on the momentum as the TexAnns left nine runners on base in a 6-3 loss that ended their NCAA II softball playoff run at the hand of the St. Mary’s Lady Rattlers at The Park at St. Mary’s Saturday.
Catcher Nyka Wood had a big day at the plate going 3-4 and driving in a run while designated player and later relief pitcher Shelby Hedrick made the most of her only hit, driving in a pair of runs.
Hedrick, who relieved Haley Freyman in third inning, went the rest of the way, giving up one earned run and four hits. The Lady Rattlers were able to get to Freyman early just a day after she went five innings in the TexAnns’ 4-0 loss in game one. Freyman surrendered seven hits and five runs.
Despite not having the runs to prove it, the TexAnns kept finding the Lady Rattlers’ pitching groove, tagging pitch Hope Russell for six hits and three runs. St. Mary’s used three pitchers before finally stopping Tarleton’s last ditch efforts in the final inning, when the TexAnns again loaded the bases but couldn’t drive the runs they needed home.
Melody Mayes (2-4), Katelyn Conlee (2-3) and pinch runner Kaitlyn Thomas all scored runs for the TexAnns who end their season at 33-22 and the deepest they have ever been in the NCAA playoffs.
