(August 9, 2017) — This time, Dublin had the experience. Hence this time, it was the Lady Lions sweeping their way to victory.

Dublin swept Hico, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20, in Roy and Lynn Neff Gymnasium Tuesday evening, avenging a straight-set loss at Hico to begin the prior season.

Jordyn Ricks was all over the place with four kills, six assists and eight digs, while Angelica Linan killed six balls and Joley Chisholm blocked five, four of them solo blocks. Kyleigh Bamber aced three serves and also led the Lady Lions in digs with 15, while Hailey Ortega added 13. Bailey Noel had four kills.

“Overall, the girls did a great job. We were moving well and had great chemistry,” said sixth-year head Lady Lion Ryan Lewis, who has guided all five of her teams to the UIL 3A playoffs. “You could see all of the time the girls put into playing and getting better this summer pay off. I’m very excited about where we are right now.”

The match was indeed about where the teams are right now rather than a comparison of programs. The Lady Tigers won in similar fashion last season when the 10 Dublin players who are back from 2016 were mostly varsity newcomers.

It was also the head coaching debut for Brittany Davis at Hico. The Tarleton alumni and past Brownwood assistant inherited a program that lost the likes standout outside hitter Kaylee Roach, lengthy middle blocker Marissa Warren and a strong setter in Emily Jackson.

Still, the 2A Lady Tigers managed to score at least 20 in two of three sets against an experienced playoff team from the next rung up the conference ladder. Hico is busy on the road this weekend with a tournament in Clifton Thursday and Saturday with no break on Friday when the Lady Tigers visit Rio Vista.

The pool play schedule in Clifton shows Hico playing at 4, 5 and 8 p.m. Thursday against Kopperl, Clifton then Palmer. Bracket action on Saturday begins at 9 a.m., but the Lady Tigers could start at 10 depending on seeding after pool results. Dublin visits Millsap at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
