WNFR: Yates wins again in tie-down, Diaz takes first in barrels

Sport: (December 9, 2014) — Marty Yates and the rest of the contingency Erath County and surrounding area are simply dominating at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

Local competitors won more than $100,000 Tuesday night at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, pushing their total to more than $650,000 through six rounds.

Yates roped and tied his way to a third win in his first WNFR appearance, completing his run in 6.9 seconds to share top money – more than $17,000 each – with Matt Shiozawa. Yates is the first competitor in any event to win three go-rounds at these finals.

Yates also won in rounds one and four and was sixth in round three. He has won more than $58,000 through six rounds, and despite missing twice to fall out of the average, is now third in the world standings behind only Shiozawa and Tuf Cooper.

Britany Diaz gave the local competitors another victory, pocketing $19,000 and change with a first-place ride of 13.89 seconds in the barrel race Tuesday.

Bobby Mote remained perfect in the bareback riding with his sixth straight successful ride pushing him to the top of the average. He earned more than $15,000 Tuesday for placing second with a score of 83 aboard Turkish Whiskey.

Stephenville header Turtle Powell and Morgan Mill heeler Dakota Kirchenschlager returned to the team roping money for the first time since winning the opening two rounds. They placed second in 4.2 seconds, earning more than $15,000 each.

It was another banner night for local team ropers as a whole. Header Jake Barnes was part of a third-place run of 4.40 seconds and leads the average with a total of 38 seconds on six head. Lipan header Clay Tryan and Huckabay heeler Jade Corkill were fourth in 5.0. They are second in the average at 44.30 on six.

Hico legendary tie-down roper Cody Ohl finished fourth in the go-round in 7.3. He’s still looking for his record-tying 51st victory in an NFR go-round after earning his 50th in round three.

Round seven is Wednesday night. The CBS Sports telecast begins at 9 p.m. CST.
