(April 2, 2015) — Sometimes a senior just takes charge.
Cassidy Cline did. And right on time, too.
“She dribbled past about five girls. I’m serious, she beat half their team,” said Stephenville head coach Weil. “It was one of the best individual goals I’ve ever seen us score.”
And it broke a tie in the 77th minute to lift the Honeybees to a 3-2 area playoff victory over San Elizario at Grande Communications Stadium in Midland Thursday evening.
Stephenville advances to face Mineral Wells, a team it defeated three times in four District 6-4A matches, on Tuesday at Bearcat Stadium in Aledo. The winner moves on to the Region I-4A Championship tournament at Kennedale on Friday, April 10 and Saturday, April 11.
“It was closer than it had to be, and it was mostly self inflicted,” said Weil of Tuesday’s close match.
Stephenville jumped ahead 2-0 in the game’s opening 27 minutes, scoring on goals by Skylar Chipman with assist from Savannah Alford and Codi Beyer with assist from Chipman.
But San Elizario fought back, cutting the score to 2-1 before a corner kick sailed into the net without so much as a touch for the equalizer with 20 seconds left in the opening half.
A defensive battle ensued after halftime, until Cline dribbled past everyone for the winner.
“She just stepped up right when we needed it,” said Weil. “You have to have that to survive in the playoffs.”
