(April 18, 2015) — Catcher Nyka Wood went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and five runs batted in to pace an offensive explosion by Tarleton State (23-18, 10-9) in a 17-4 win in a series-opening doubleheader against Texas A&M-Kingsville (14-23-1, 5-15-1).
Well, at least it was supposed to be a doubleheader.
Game two was suspended by rain with Texas A&M-Kingsville leading 4-2 in the bottom of the third. Play will resume at 1 p.m. Sunday at Tarleton Softball Complex with Erika Menchaca at second and one out for the TexAnns.
That sets up a long day for the Lone Star Conference rivals, as the regularly-scheduled Sunday double-header will follow the conclusion of the suspended contest.
There was nothing suspending Tarleton’s bats in the series opener Saturday afternoon, as the TexAnns amassed 18 hits including three home runs and two doubles. Wood wasn’t the only one turning in big offensive numbers – Melody Mayse was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in, while Katelyn Conlee and Menchaca each had a home run and two hits and each drove in two runs.
It was the ninth home run for Menchaca and the eighth for Conlee, the team’s home run leaders for the season. Conlee leads the team in batting average at .319 and in RBIs with 44. Menchaca hits .388 and has driven in 31 runs, while Wood bats .382 with 40 RBIs.
Haley Freyman (17-10) pitched all five innings to earn the win for Tarleton. She yielded six hits and issued a walk.
Tarleton is fifth in the LSC entering Sunday play. A&M-Kingsville eighth in the nine-team league.
