STEPHENVILLE (April 21, 2015) — For the second straight night, Stephenville had a lead. And for the second straight night, the Yellow Jackets couldn’t hold on.

Mac Mueller allowed just two runs on three hits in a complete game effort on the mound and also drove in two runs for Wylie, which defeated Stephenville 7-2 to lock up the 6-4A title. The Bulldogs swept Stephenville in district games, though the Yellow Jackets did beat them in a non-district meeting early in the season.

Stephenville scored in the bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Ben Martin singled, stole second, reached third on a bunt and crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Maddux Conger.

Wylie tied the game on close play at the plate, with the runner tagging at third on a sacrifice fly to left field, then knocking the ball loose at the plate after an impressive throw by left fielder Josh Olivan. The Bulldogs were ahead for good after a dropped third strike, a fielder’s choice, a wild pitch and an RBI single to left in the third.

Olivan walked and eventually scored when Alex Jimenez extended his hit streak to three games with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, but Stephenville would get no closer.

Mueller drove in two of Wylie’s final three runs, one in the fifth and another in the seventh. The Bulldogs also scored on a wild pitch and passed ball in the sixth.

Vanderbilt signee Maddux Conger started and took the loss on the hill for Stephenville. He surrendered five runs, four of them earned, in five innings plus a batter. Alex Jimenez pitched the rest of the sixth for Stephenville, and Bradley Morrison surrendered a run in the seventh.

Wylie has secured the district title, while Stephenville still controls its own destiny in the race for second. The Jackets visit Graham on Friday.
