(Saturday, April 25, 2015) — While many Tarleton State students were out enjoying the Larry Joe Taylor Texas Music Festival, the TexAnn softball team was doing a little celebrating of its own – with 51 runs over the course of four games in two days. And during the second game on Saturday, Eastern New Mexico jumped out to a big led, their first of the four-game series, but Tarleton answered with 17 runs.
“I am so proud of our team,” said head coach Julie Mata, according to an online article published by Tarleton Athletic Communications Department.. “We fought hard and swept a road series against a team that hits the ball really well. I was excited to see Jessie Thompson come in and get a big home run for us. Mikayla (Stogsdill) and Nyka (Wood) had a couple of big home runs to put us on top in game two. We could have gotten down when they jumped out to a big lead, but this team never quits. This team has brought championship culture back to Tarleton Softball.”

Over the first three innings of Game 2, the Zias scored seven runs. However, that’s all the TexAnns would allow. Freshman catcher Nyka Wood knocked a grand slam to right field to cap off an eight-run fourth to put Tarleton up 8-7, and they wouldn’t look back in the 17-7 victory.
Wood led the TexAnns in Game 2 with three hits, three runs and five RBIs in five at bats, Savannah Stech had three hits, two runs and two RBIs in three at bats, Erika Menchaca had three hits, a run and an RBI in five at bats and Laruen Powers had two hits and three runs in four at bats.
The TexAnns took a decisive lead in the second inning of Game 1 on Saturday. While the Zias struck first in the bottom of the first, Tarleton scored five in the top of the second. With two on base, Wood once again stepped up with a two-out, two-run single.
Pitcher Haley Freyman secured her 19th win of the season and tossed her 12th complete game of the season by putting in all six innings of work in Game 1. She allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk. The TexAnns managed to get every girl in the lineup a recorded base bit in the Tarleton victory 10-2.

Kayelyn Conlee lead Tarleton at the plate with two hits, a run and an RBI, Melody Mayse had four hits, two runs and an RBI, Wood had two hits and two RBIs and Rebekah Allen had a run and two hits in four at bats.
Tarleton was able to completely sweep Eastern New Mexico in the four games over the weekend. The TexAnns have secured a chance to complete in their 14th trip to the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament next weekend (May 1-3) at Schaeffer Park in Canyon.
