ERATH COUNTY (July 17, 2015) — After several days on the run, Trey Austin Phillips, 23, turned himself in to authorities just after 6 p.m. Friday.
Phillips has been running from authorities since he escaped a sheriff’s cruiser last week. It began when a Selden couple discovered a suspect asleep in their home. Records from the incident indicate Phillips was asleep in a home even when sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene. Bryant said a deputy handcuffed the suspect and put him in the car so that he could speak with the homeowners. When the deputy got back to the cruiser, Phillips was gone.
While the sheriff’s office didn’t know how Phillips escaped, they did work quickly to get the information out to local media. According to Erath County Sheriff Tommy Bryant, Phillips was wanted for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (a previous charge) and evading arrest or detention for running from the cruiser last week.
The sheriff said his office put pressure on the suspect with the help of media outlets in the area and he turned himself into the Erath County Jail.
“We appreciate everyone who helped spread the word on the suspect,” Bryant said late Friday.
