STEPHENVILLE (September 18, 2015) — Stephenville quarterback Easton Jones is good to go, but the Yellow Jackets will be taking the field without starting defensive back Seth Heupel for the foreseeable future.
Heupel is out four weeks, head coach Greg Winder has confirmed, after suffering a spiral fracture to his thumb in practice on Tuesday. He had surgery on Thursday. The sophomore is fifth on the team with 25 tackles, 14 of them solo. He had seven stops in last week’s 10-7 win over Everman.
Mason Holstein steps into Heupel’s spot in the secondary when Stephenville visits Lubbock Cooper at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Jones will have to wear an ankle brace amazon as he leads the offense against Cooper. He suffered a bone contusion on the game-winning drive against Everman. Senior Josh Nowell took over at quarterback and rushed for 46 yards to set up the game-winning field goal, for which Jones returned to the field as the holder.
Jones was classified as day-to-day after x-rays confirmed the injury was just a contusion. But he has practiced all week and is safe to return to game conditions, Winder says. The sophomore QB is 38-60 passing (63 percent) for 514 yards and five touchdowns while also rushing for 39 yards.
Dublin and Hico are both without their starting quarterbacks.
Brady Moore suffered a sprained ankle against Albany two weeks ago and did not play against Rio Vista last week. Dublin visits Crawford at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Hico starter Parker Wood missed the first two games with an injury, then suffered a torn ACL in his return last week against Jarrell. Hico travels to Archer City Friday evening, kicking off at 7 p.m.
