(December 31, 2015) — District play has yet to begin and already Huckabay and Lingleville are going back and forth.
Jarod Hagood doubled up with 14 points and 12 rebounds and Lingleville needed every bit of it to hold off 25 points from JW Weiss in a 45-38 tournament win at Clyde High School Wednesday night.
It’s the second time the arch-rivals have squared off, as Huckabay won the championship showdown in tournament play in Graford earlier this season. The rural Erath County rivals still have their annual home-and-home district match-ups ahead.
While Weiss did almost all the damage for Huckabay, Lingleville showed balance behind Hagood. Tim Griffin and Colbe Stoker struggled to a combined 0-11 from the 3-point arc – the team was just 1-14 – but still managed seven points each with Stoker dealing five assists and Griffin four. The Cardinals had 16 assists on 19 made baskets.
Tom VanKranenburg scored nine points and gathered eight rebounds for Lingleville while Bailey Fenn collected six points and six boards.
The rivals square off January 12 in Huckabay and January 29 in Lingleville in games sure to affect playoff seeding and perhaps the district championship in 18-A.
