STEPHENVILLE (January 14, 2016) — Former Stephenville assistant coach and Tarleton standout quarterback Cliff Watkins is the lone finalist to be the next head football coach at Glen Rose High School, according to reports published by the Glen Rose Reporter and Abilene Reporter News.

Watkins, a Breckenridge native, helped Tarleton to the 2003 NCAA Division II playoffs, earning all-conference, all-region and honorable-mention All-America honors. He was later receivers coach at Stephenville, where he was on staff for the 2012 3A Division I state championship.

Watkins resigned Thursday at Eastland, according to a report by Travis Smith of the Glen Rose Reporter. He was 21-5 at 3A Eastland and is taking over a Glen Rose team moving from 3A to 4A with district alignments to be announced by the UIL in February.

Watkins passed for 3,533 yards in a single season at Tarleton, then was on staff at Cisco before spending 2008-12 at Stephenville according to the Glen Rose Reporter. When Watkins left Stephenville he spent one season as offensive coordinator at Midland Lee before being named head coach at Eastland.
