STEPHENVILLE (January 15, 2016) — Stephenville couldn’t have asked for a better start to the Knights of Columbus Challenge of Champions after its varsity girls and boys teams each rolled to easy wins and the junior varsity girls tied a varsity club from Everman Friday at Stephenville Soccer Association Complex.
The Yellow Jacket varsity team cruised past the Waco University JV, 4-2. Stehpenville actually led 4-1 before a meaningless final minutes goal by University. Isaac Iribarren scored the equalizer just before intermission after Stephenville trailed for much of the first half, then Tio Rocha headed one home off a corner by Brett Alford that stood as the game winner early in the second half.
Rocha wasn’t through, scoring off an assist from Aaron Burrows for a 3-1 advantage before Matthe Chapman iced the win with perhaps their most impressive goal of the day. Keeper Noble Alexander came out to push the ball forward to the midline before a pair of back heel passes sprung Chapman on a fast break and he beat the keeper before pushing the ball inside the right post.
The varsity Honeybees took a while to capitalize on their many opportunities in open play, but Erin Couch knocked in a goal on a penalty kick in the opening minutes. Stephenville kept the pressure on, and once they broke through, the flood gates opened in the 5-0 rout.
The first of two Skylar Chpman goals made it 2-0 before Miami commit Bayleigh Chaviers slid passed a defender and hammered one past the keeper for a 3-0 lead. The second half began with a flurry as Mikayla Hobbs and Chipman scored for 5-0 and the rout was officially on.
The junior varsity Bees tied Everman varsity 1-1 and face Lorena varsity at 1 p.m.
The varsity Bees face Waco University at 1 p.m., while the Yellow Jackets meet Azle JV at 1 p.m.
