Rathke wins men’s mile, Coughlin takes women’s 5,000

HOUSTON (January 30, 2016) – Tarleton track and field wrapped up the final day of its opening meet at the Houston Invitational hosted by the University of Houston Saturday.

Chase Rathke‘s performance in winning the 1-mile run highlighted Tarleton’s day at the track. Rathke ran the mile in 4:05.08 and broke his own school record (4:08.27 in 2015) and claimed a provisional mark in the process. Rathke’s time is the third-fastest recorded in NCAA Division II this season and the fastest in the Lone Star Conference. Rathke also finished third in the 800m run in a time of 1:52.41 to earn a provisional mark.

Aly Coughlin finished in third in the 3000m run with a time of 10:02.53 but an adjusted time gave the senior an official time of 9:57.41. Coughlin broke her own school record of 10:05.61 and claimed a provisional mark for the second straight day after winning the 5000m. Coughlin’s 3000m time is tops in the Lone Star Conference this season.



The women’s 4x400m relay consisting of Ariel Ballard, DeAijha Hicks-Boyce, Leslie Zupanic, andJasmine Owens finished fifth in a time of 3:54.11 but was converted to 3:51.05. The converted time gives the relay team a new school record, surpassing the time of 3:52.40 set back in 2015. It’s also the fastest record time in the 4x400m in the Lone Star Conference this season.

Tarleton will return to the University of Houston to compete in the Howie Ryan Invitational on Feb. 12.
