Allen was a well-known and popular figure in Hico for many decades. He owned and operated the Koffee Kup Family Restaurant in Hico for 41 years and helped turn it into a state and national icon.
Allen was born in Fort Worth, the only child of Thelma Weddle Allen Taylor and Jack Edward Allen. He graduated from Dublin High School in 1967 and then from North Texas State University in 1971. He later received a Master’s in Accounting from Tarleton State University and was a Certified Public Accountant.
Allen owned the Koffee Kup Family Restaurant since 1975. He was elected to the Hico ISD School Board in 1982 and served for 18 years, including several terms as board president. He had also served on the county school board when it was in place. Allen had a keen interest in education and remained an enthusiastic supporter of Hico ISD following his service on the board. He was active in state education issues and also served as a director on the Texas Association of School Boards, eventually becoming president of that state organization. He officiated at the TASB Convention in Houston when the Hico High School band performed there. He remained a member of the past presidents of TASB organization and attended yearly directors’ meetings. He also served as a consultant to various school districts in superintendent searches.
A man of many accomplishments, Allen had a pilot’s license and in recent years had obtained a sailing certificate. Also an avid snow skier and a member of the North Texas Ski Club, Lynn enjoyed many ski trips with family and friends across the U.S. and to France, Italy, Norway and Germany.
He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Bosque County Bank/First Community Bank, The First Baptist Church of Hico and the Hico Civic Club. Allen had been honored as Hico Citizen of the Year and with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Hico Civic Club. Allen never said “no” to a community or school need and always contributed time, money and resources for every local program and organization.
Allen was married to wife Nancy Feb. 28, 2004 in Taos, New Mexico. The couple had a beach house on South Padre Island and spent much of their time traveling after Lynn had made longtime employees Irene Leach and Pat Johnson partners in the restaurant. The Allens had recently sold the beach house to move closer to family members in the Fort Worth area, where they looked forward to spending more time with kids and grandkids.
Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Thelma and Jack; and step-mother Juanita Royal Allen, and step-brother Alan DeWitt Royal.
Lynn Allen is survived by his wife, Nancy Mari Mitchell Allen; son Patrick Bryant Allen and wife Tamera Lynn Caldwell Allen of Colleyville, Texas; son Scott Edward Allen and wife Rachel Michele Courtney Allen of Bahrs Scrub, Queensland, Australia; Nancy’s children Amy Beth Lee LLanes, and husband Isaac of Spring Hill, Tennessee, Scott Patrick Lee of Edmond, Oklahoma and Daniel Mark Lee of Fort Worth; grandchildren James Bryant (J.B.)
