STEPHENVILLE (February 9, 2016) — Tarleton State University plans to relocate its University Police Department to the former city of Stephenville Fire Station No. 2 at the northwest corner of campus after renovating the facility.

The renovation project is expected to begin in May, with the move of the University Police Department and Parking Services Office slated for December.

As part of the renovation, the former fire station’s drive-through bay area will be enclosed to create offices for police and parking department personnel and a reception area for visitors.

The building will be repurposed during the project to create areas for conference and break rooms, evidence and file storage, and offices for police department administration. The renovated fire station will provide approximately 4,300 square feet of space.

The campus perimeter location for university police will provide students and visitors easier access to services and quicker response times, said Tarleton Police Chief Matt Welch. The location also will provide more visibility to the department and a more functional facility for the growing campus law enforcement agency.

Once the police office moves from Wisdom Gym, its current space will be repurposed in 2017 to create additional much needed space for the Department of Kinesiology and for Tarleton Athletics.

Tarleton acquired the former Fire Station No. 2 from the city of Stephenville in February 2014, and has used the building to store its Mobile Welcome Center trucks and trailers since purchasing the property. The Stephenville Fire Department vacated the facility upon opening its new fire station at 1301 Pecan Hill Dr. on the Northwest Loop. According to city officials, the facility served as a fire station from 1976 until its closing two years ago.
