The Ranger College men’s basketball team took another huge step down the road to respectability on Wednesday morning. Uhh … better make that a huge leap.

Ranger College, fresh off a win over nationally-ranked McLennan and a 30-point victory over Northern Texas Junior College Athletic Conference rival Southwestern Christian, vaulted to No. 19 in the latest NJCAA Division I basketball rankings. The poll was released on Feb. 9 via the NJCAA’s web site.

The Rangers, 21-4 for the season and 8-0 in NTJCAC play heading into tonight’s showdown with Collin County, climbed five spots in the national rankings, moving from No. 24 a week ago. The No. 19 ranking is the highest RC has been ranked since early in the year when the team entered the poll at No. 16.

Trinity Valley (TX) held onto the top spot in the poll. TVCC, 24-1 overall, received 14 of the 16 first-place votes cast and rolled up 349 total points in voting by coaches throughout the nation. Georgia Highlands and North Idaho remained at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively.

Georgia Highlands, 23-1, amasses 332 total points in the balloting. North Idaho, the only unbeaten team in the rankings at 26-0, had 327 points.

Ranger College and North Idaho are among a small number of colleges teams – at any level – that have not lost a game on the court. The Rangers have won all 25 of their regular season games, but were forced to forfeit their first four games due to an administrative error involving a transfer form.

Ranger’s main rival for the NTJCAC title, McLennan slipped to No. 14 in the poll. The Highlanders, who have lost twice to RC this season, fell from No. 9 to No. 14.

Odessa College is the only other Region V team to make the top 25. The Wranglers checked in at No. 21 – down four spots from a week ago.
