FORT WORTH (February 16, 2016) — The School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Strategic Studies at Tarleton State University has partnered with the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid, Spain, to provide unique research opportunities for faculty and students at both institutions.

“This creates opportunities for research by both universities that ultimately will benefit criminal justice initiatives in North America and Europe,” said Dr. Alex del Carmen, executive director of Tarleton’s School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Strategic Studies. “We are excited about the possibilities this partnership brings to Tarleton, the U.S and the European continent.”

The school’s existing partnership with the United Arab Emirates makes collaboration with Spain a logical next-step for Tarleton as it pursues future partnerships with other European academic institutions. Together, Tarleton and the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria will compete for national and international grant funds to improve criminal justice worldwide.

The Universidad Francisco de Vitoria is a private university located in Pozuelo de Alarcon. The Roman Catholic institution is run by the Legion of Christ and named after Francisco de Victoria, considered to be the father of international law. The university specializes in legal training for criminal justice professionals who serve the European community at-large.

Tarleton’s School of Criminology, Criminal Justice and Strategic Studies offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees specializing in homeland security; cybercrime and international criminal justice; predictive and analytical policing; criminal justice leadership and public policy; and mediation, arbitration, legal studies and forensics.

Earlier this month, The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents gave Tarleton the go-ahead to seek authorization from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) for a doctor of philosophy in criminal justice, Tarleton’s first Ph.D. program. If approved by the THECB, the new doctorate—planned to begin with the fall 2016 semester—will be the only one of its kind in the nation, combining criminology, criminal justice and strategic studies in a single degree program.

“Tarleton’s pursuit of strong, new degree programs—like the Ph.D. in criminal justice—is evidence of our continued commitment to respond to the changing academic and professional needs of our students and the communities we serve,” del Carmen said. “The new degree program, along with our bachelor’s and master’s programs in criminal justice, is designed with the working professional in mind. Criminal justice students have the unique opportunity to learn from a group of diverse faculty members, known worldwide for their expertise.”
