Pitching of Morrison, Gibbons carry Stephenville to pair of wins

(March 10, 2016) — Brad Morrison tossed a complete-game three-hit shutout and Caleb Gibbons yielded just a run on four hits over six innings as Stephenville defeated Childress, 3-0, and Holderville, Oklahoma, 4-1, on Thursday in classic play at Bowie.

The Yellow Jackets return to the diamond in North Texas Friday, taking on Nocona at 11:15 a.m. at Bowie High School and Graham at 6 p.m. at Henrietta High School. They return to Bowie for a 1:30 p.m. Saturday bout with host Bowie.

Morrison struck out 10 Childress batters and didn’t issue a walk in his masterpiece that included 110 pitches, 72 of them strikes. His biggest aid from the plate came from fellow pitcher Gibbons, who was 2-for-2 with a double, a walk and two runs driven in.

The other Stephenville RBI came from Austin Wayland, who was 1-for-3.

Gibbons controlled the Holderville lineup with just as much efficiency, striking out 11 and walking just two. Sophomore Easton Jones was perfect in relief, earning a save by striking out all three batters he faced in the seventh.

Cody Stoors went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Jones also drove in a run for the Yellow Jackets.

Stephenville will follow the Saturday conclusion to the classic with their home opener on Tuesday. The Jackets host Kennedale at 7 p.m. at James T. Young Baseball Field.
