STEPHENVILLE (March 19, 2016) — For the first time in school history, Stephenville girls take a district’s top seed into the state soccer playoffs.

After a win Friday left Stephenville tied as a district champion alongside Abilene Wylie, the Honeybees were awarded the No. 1 seed based on goal differential, outscoring district foes Brownwood and Mineral Wells by a larger margin than Wylie did.

“I’m calling us district champs,” said Stephenville head coach Casey Weil. “A few years ago when we tied for it and we ended up being the No. 2 seed I didn’t call us district champs, but this time we are the No. 1 seed.”

For the first time in school history.

The Honeybees wrapped it up with another shutout by keeper Jordyn Howle, a Texas A&M-Commerce signee who has worked with stellar defense in front of her to keep more than half the opponents of Stephenville off the scoreboard all year.

But shutouts are just half the equation. Other trends also continued Friday – the season long scoring of Julie Morken for one, and the consistency Stephenville fans have witnessed from other dominating ball strikers such as Bayleigh Chaviers and Codi Beyer for another.

Morken scored off assists from Chaviers and Beyer, giving her two goals before Beyer finished the scoring herself off the second assist by Chaviers.

It all sets up a Region I-4A bi-district playoff match with Bridgeport, the bottom playoff qualifier from the next district, and it’s set for 5 p.m. Thursday at Kangaroo Stadium in Weatherford. Even that brings good news as Stephenville fans will have a doubleheader with their undefeated – and twice tied – boys team taking the pitch in Weatherford at 7 p.m.

“We finished the year playing the best soccer in our district. Abilene Wylie was ranked No. 2 behind Kennedale in most polls, and beating them the second time gave us a lot of confidence,” said Weil. “We’re playing the type of soccer we need to be playing going into the playoffs.”

History-making soccer by Stephenville terms. History Weil and company are looking to continue with three wins standing between them and a third trip to the regional tournament.
