STEPHENVILLE (May 19, 2016) — Cheryl Floyd has resigned after 14 years as superintendent of Huckabay ISD, effective August 31.
Rumors broke about the resignation on Thursday, and despite being unable to answer or immediately return a phone call seeking confirmation, Floyd sent the following to The Flash by text message:
“Can’t call but yes it’s true. I resigned. Effective Aug 31”
Huckabay ISD school board trustee Danny Phillips did return a call.
“She announced Tuesday night at the board meeting that she was going to resign and she has announced it to the staff,” said Phillips. “She’ll be here until August unless she finds another job. If she does, she’ll leave before that.”
Trustees will have a called meeting next Tuesday with representatives of Texas Association of School Boards to discuss their options in filling the superintendent vacancy.
It’s a time of great change at Huckabay, which has had multiple teachers resign in recent weeks and will also be searching for a new boys basketball coach with Bryan Blackwell leaving for the same position at Christoval. The school is also welcoming a new principal in Nick Heupel, formerly principal at Linglevlle and currently principal at Santo.
Also on Tuesday, trustees approved girls basketball head coach Caleb Walls to fulfill the role of athletic director.
The school district held a bond election asking residents to approve a new building to house a gymnasium, kitchen and four classrooms, but it failed on the May ballot with more than 60 percent voting against the measure.
