STEPHENVILLE (June 7, 2016) – Aly Coughlin and Jakob Damstra represented Tarleton Athletics as the Lone Star Conference Scholar-Athlete award winners, the league announced on Tuesday.

Each academic year, the LSC presents a Scholar-Athlete Award to one male and one female student-athlete at each member institution. These student-athletes are selected as representatives of the outstanding accomplishments in athletics, scholarship and leadership that are displayed on each LSC campus during the year. To be eligible for consideration, student-athletes must have participated at least two years in their sport and be a member of the graduating class.

Coughlin adds another award to an already decorated senior year. The two-sport athlete from Rockwall was the LSC Cross Country Academic Runner of the Year and the LSC Runner of the Year, won an LSC Cross Country championship and individual title, named to the LSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll, and qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships as an individual. During Indoor Track & Field, Coughlin was named the LSC Outstanding Female Athlete and the LSC Academic Player of the Year. In the spring during Outdoor Track & Field, Coughlin was on the LSC All-Academic team and named LSC All-Conference after two gold medals at the LSC Championships as well as USTFCCA All-Region.

Damstra becomes the third member from Texan basketball to be named an LSC Scholar-Athlete, joining Marlin Cloudy (2008-09) and Wale Ogunoye (2010-11). Damstra was a two-time LSC Academic Player of the Year, the only player in Tarleton basketball history to receive the award and only the third player in conference history to win the award multiple times. Damstra helped lead Tarleton to back-to-back South Central Regional Championships, making Tarleton the only school in LSC history to win four regional titles. Damstra went 103-26 with the Texans in his four years on the court.
