HICO (June 12, 2016) –As the annual Cody Ohl PBR event drew to a close, shots rang out. One man lay on the ground, another on the run. A confusing twist of incidents lead to a shooting, a false identification and an arrest this weekend in Hico.
Officers were dispatched to the Ohl arena along with Hamilton County EMS Saturday night to a report of a person being shot. According to witnesses on scene, two males fought over a gun and one was shot and the other left the scene.
Hamilton County EMS took the victim, who reportedly had gunshot wounds to the face, to meet Air Evac out of Granbury at a landing zone in Hico. The helicopter took the patient to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.
In the same few moments as Air Evac was taking off from the parking lot of the baseball field, a suspect was stopped by Hico Marshal Todd Ward for driving erratically on Railroad Street. He said during the traffic stop, the suspect gave an id for person with the last name Mack.
Ward said during the traffic stop, the suspect was acting suspicious so he called for backup. During the stop the call came out over the radio that a shooting had occurred on County Road 208 and a subject description that was similar to his suspect. As Ward was speaking with the suspect, who was later identified as Tio Sheercon Jackson, 39 of Waco, he fled on foot.
Later it was discovered Jackson had stolen the vehicle from a bull rider at the event and given his identification to Ward during the stop. Before this was discovered, officers had already run the victim’s id over the scanner.
Witnesses at the ‘Chute Out’ said one of the men was possibly attempting to steal the gun from a pickup parked at the event and the other man involved in the shooting was possibly trying to stop him. None of this was confirmed by law enforcement.
However, law enforcement searched the area for “a black male subject believed to be involved in a shooting.” He was last seen fleeing the scene on foot and wearing jeans, cowboy boots, a green t-shirt and blue baseball cap with tattoos.
Ward said assistance was called in and officers searched the area overnight, some even using trained tracking dogs in an effort to find the suspect. Hamilton County Deputies were assisted by Hico Marshals, Texas DPS, Game Wardens and Erath County Sheriff’s Office.
Early Sunday morning, law enforcement received word of a suspicious man riding a bicycle east on Highway 6 and officers converged on the area.
They arrested Jackson who was booked into the Hamilton County Jail on charges of aggravated robbery (first degree felony), unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (state jail felony) and theft of a firearm (state jail felony). He is being held on $55,000 bond.
Hamilton County Sheriff Justin Caraway said he would like to thank the hard work of his deputies, the Hico Marshal’s Office, Hico VFD, Texas DPS, Texas Rangers, Erath County Sheriff’s Office and the Hamilton County EMS who all aided in the investigation.
