(June 12, 2016) — Clint Mayo of Stephenville rode three straight broncs for 219 total points, holding off Lane McGehee by one point in the end to claim the Texas High School Rodeo Association championship in the bareback riding.

Mayo scored 74-74-71 at Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, wrapping up the championship in the finals Saturday. He will make a return trip to the National High School Rodeo Association finals after appearing there the first time last year.

Mayo won every round of every rodeo in Region III competition this season. The first round he didn’t win all year was the opening round of the THSRA finals, when he was second.

Mayo is the only local athlete who placed in the top four to move on to the national finals, while others came close.

That’s especially true for Sy Felton, who finished fifth in the short go and seventh in the average in calf roping. Katie Stewart made the short go in goat tying and the team roping tandem of Wyatt Bray and Ky Redstrom were in the short go in team roping.

For Mayo, the NHSFR is July 17-23 in Gillette, Wyoming.
