STEPHENVILLE (August 12, 2016) — Stephenville shook off its troubles handling the ground attack of White Settlement Brewer in time to outscore the Bears 2 touchdowns to 1 in a simulated quarter to end scrimmage play at Memorial Stadium Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets were still outscored, 5-3, allowing all five scores on the ground. One Brewer touchdown was called back for holding during the controlled portion of the scrimmage, but the Bears were allowed to march in for their only TD of the live quarter after a questionable fourth-down spot when Stephenville was so certain nose guard and Colorado School of Mines verbal pledge Jacob Lopez had stopped the ball carrier short of the line to gain that the defense was already celebrating on the sideline and the offense was walking onto the field.

Offensively, the Yellow Jackets struck through the air on the second play of the game, a 68-yard TD from junior quarterback Easton Jones to classmate Holden Haile. Jones also scored on an option keeper that covered six yards, set up by a big gain on the ground by sophomore running back Krece Nowak.

The Jones TD began the scoring in the simulated quarter. Brewer answered with its fifth TD rush before Jones and Haile hooked up with another big play. It appeared Haile stepped into the front corner of the end zone – even knocking down the pylon – but he was ruled out of bounds at the one-yard line. Cameron Frazier scored the next play out of a goal line offensive package.

Stephenville scrimmages at Granbury next Friday and opens its regular season at Cleburne on August 26.
