ERATH COUNTY (November 8, 2016) – The 2nd Annual Mickey Belew Memorial Scholarship Roping is just days away.

The event honors Belew, who lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in 2014 at the age of 47. It’s a full-day of fundraising and fellowship with a two-fold purpose.

Anna Belew said the memorial roping is a way to keep her husband’s memory alive, while reminding his children Cade, 8, Ryan Edwin, 16, and Jodi Ann, 22, what their father was all about.

“Mickey had a kind heart and giving spirit,” Anna said. “That was a big part of who he was. He dedicated his life, both professionally and personally, to helping people.”

He was a firefighter/paramedic for the city of Stephenville, as well as a firefighter with Erath County Fire Rescue and volunteer with the Dublin Fire Department.

The Mickey Belew Memorial Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization, took proceeds from the 2015 event and awarded $5,000 to Dublin and Huckabay students.

“It was an honor to award that amount in our first year, but we hope to see the amount we give back to Erath County students continue to grow each year,” Anna said.

The event is held at Circle T Arena, located at 4007 West Highway 36 in Hamilton.

Mickey was a roper, making the tie-down, breakaway and match roping the perfect way to honor his legacy.

“He loved to rope,” Anna said.

Spectators looking to help raise funds and while getting an eyeful of the most action in shortest amount of time are being encouraged arrive before 2 p.m., when National Final Rodeo cowboys Hunter Herrin and Timber Moore are expected to hit the arena. They will go head-to-head in a 10-head match roping. Moore was the No. 2 finisher in 2016 world standing and Herrin was No. 3.

“It will be a lot of fun watching these two cowboys compete,” Anna said, adding the winner will take home a $2,000 payout which is made possible by event sponsors. “I cannot thank these competitors and the sponsors who make the event possible enough.”

A silent auction will feature an array of items, including woodwork, custom handmade quilts, a Larry Joe Taylor Texas Music Festival 2016 autographed guitar, an official custom belt buckle from Shea Michelle Buckle Design, crafts, home décor, gift cards and gift certificates to area businesses and more.

Anna said individuals and businesses that would like to contribute to the scholarship fund still have time. Silent auction items will be accepted through Saturday. Simply message the Mickey Belew Memorial Scholarship Roping Facebook page to arrange for item pick up or for information on providing financial support. You can also visit the event website for sponsorship information.

“We hope everyone will come out to Circle T and enjoy a great time for a great cause,” Anna said.

And to honor a great man.
