(January 27, 2017) — Jayci Morton scored 16 points and Stephenville (22-6, 8-1) all but iced a top two finish in the 8-4A girls race with a 51-38 district win over Venus Friday at Neff Gym.

The Honeybees outscored Venus 26-15 after halftime, pulling away despite leading just 25-23 at the break. It was similar to the first time the teams met in Venus, where the Bees won by nine. Stephenville visits third-place Midlothian Heritage on Tuesday. Heritage needs a win to avenge their overtime loss at Stephenville, and then for someone else to upset the Bees in order to pull into an unlikely tie for second.

It was still just a nine-point game Friday, until Tesslie Baker hit two free throws and Venus committed a foul fighting for rebound position as the second shot fell through. That enabled Payton Wall to add two more foul shots, stretching the advantage to 13 and basically icing the win.

Jordan Carter powered the Bees in the first half, when she scored eight of her 10 points. Hailey Martin hit three 3-pointers to match Baker with nine, Wall scored five and Katie Roberson added two.
