DUBLIN (February 21, 2017) – The Dublin ISD Board of Trustees spent half of their meeting Monday night listening to a presentation from Powell & Leon Attorneys on what the school district, district employees and board members can and cannot say to voters about the upcoming bond election.

According to representatives present at the meeting, members can only provide factual information, they cannot say anything for or against the bond or school facilities that might influence someone’s vote while representing the district.

For example, an employee may go to a civic organizational meeting on his or her own time and speak for the bond. However, the district or superintendent cannot pay for and place signs telling people to vote for the bond. District employees cannot, as representatives of the district, speak to voters using terms that classify as advocacy, like ‘terrific’ or ‘awful’ when discussing the bond. While there are numerous specific examples of what the district can and cannot do, board members were told to simply stick with factual information only when speaking to voters as district representatives to ensure no violations are made.

In addition to approving all of the teacher, teacher/coach, teacher/band director, R.N. nurse, librarian, educational diagnostician, educational diagnosticians/counselors and assistant speech-language pathologist contracts, the Dublin School Board also voted in favor of approving the recommendations regarding continued employment of several teachers and teacher/coaches who were on probationary contracts with the district.

“I’m very pleased to see the approval of our group of teachers and coaches,” said Superintendent Dr. Rodney Schneider. “This is a great group and we are very proud of them and the students they work with, where the scores are and the progress we’re making right now. I think these folks will be good for the district moving forward.”

In other business, the board approved:

  • the new FFA local policy update
  • the first reading of a TASB policy update
  • the 2017-2018 School Calendar
  • a waiver for student growth within the teacher appraisal system from TEA
  • and to sale the property known as the Old Intermediate School parking lot (lot across from the old High School) to the highest bidder – Mrs. Martin purchased the lot for $2,010.
