(April 5, 2017) — Nadine Arredondo launched a grand slam as part of a six-run first, Stephenville added four more in the top of the seventh and Julia Flores shut down Glen Rose after the first inning Tuesday night.

No. 7 Stephenville prevailed with a 10-2 road win in what actually proved to be one of its tougher 8-4A district contests.

The Bees (20-3, 8-0) won their eighth straight and remain unbeaten in 8-4A, having outscored district opponents by the combined margin of 112-7. They host Venus at 7 p.m. Friday at McClesky Field.

Arredondo’s grand slam – her school-record 10th home run of the season – was a first-inning shot to straightaway center field to put Stephenville on top the entire way. Morgan DiCiccio and Madison Gilder each singled before Flores was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Arredondo, who went deep on the fourth pitch she saw.

The lead grew to 6-0 before Glen Rose ever came up to bat. Jessica Howell doubled and Sami Shaffer singled following the Arredondo blast. Jessica Ebeling singled to bring in Howell, and even with Shaffer being out for interference at third, Ebeling scored on a passed ball to open up the six-run lead.

Glen Rose answered with two runs on three hits, a walk and a passed ball in the bottom of the second, but Shaffer, playing catcher, caught a runner stealing to end the inning with the Honeybees still safely on top 6-2.

Then it turned into a grind, with both pitchers taking over for the next five innings.

It wasn’t until the seventh that Stephenville exploded again to put the game away. Arredondo led off with a walk, took second on a passed ball and reached third on an error that allowed Shaffer to get on base. Arredondo then scored on a passed ball, while Shaffer moved to second on a walk.

Sam Luna then unloaded a single to center field, where a fielding error – the ball went under the glove of the outfielder and all the way to the fence – allowed the base runners – Luna included – to circle the diamond for three more runs.

Glen Rose did no further damage in the seventh against Flores, who struck out 10 and walked one while yielding five hits.

DiCiccio finished 2-for-5 from the plate while Arredondo, Shaffer and Luna were each 2-for-3. Gilder, Howell and Ebeling rounded out the 11 total hits by Stephenville.
